However, Jerry’s plans are stopped by Dave Whiteman (Richard Dreyfuss), the owner of the property, who pulls him out of the water and invites him into his home. Although, initially rejected by Dave’s wife, Barbara (Bette Midler), and the maid, Carmen (Elizabeth Peña), Jerry eventually becomes part of the family, especially when Barbara discovers that her beloved mut, Matisse, likes him.
