John McClane of the NYPD and his wife and Nakatomi employee, Holly Gennaro (Bonnie Bedelia). The festivities come to an abrupt end when all but one of the partygoers are taken hostage by a group of terrorists, headed by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), who plan to steal 640 million dollars in negotiable bearer bonds that are locked in a safe owned by the Nakatomi corporation. Disregarding the orders of the authorities surrounding the building, McClane takes on the villains and soon discovers that Gruber has no intention of letting any of the hostages go free.
