When the children discover a nearby train station they become friendly with Perks (Gregor Fisher), the station porter. They also become friends with an elderly gentleman (Richard Attenborough). After helping to avert a disaster, giving shelter to a Russian dissident and rescuing a boarder at a nearby school, the children become the toast of the town. Eventually, they discover the truth about their father and ask their elderly friend to help bring him home.
