When Michael (Victor Slezak) and Carolyn Johnson (Annie Corley) find some letters belonging to their late mother, Francesca, they discover that she had a brief affair with Robert Kincaid while has was on assignment to photograph the historic bridges of Madison County. Although their affair was only brief, the siblings can clearly see that they were deeply in love with each other. Francesca also requested that she be cremated and her ashes thrown from a nearby bridge. Michael initially refuses but relents after realising that their mother stayed with their father (Jim Haynie) even though she loved another man.
