Both named Edith Bouvier Beale and raised as Park Avenue débutantes, they both withdrew from New York society, taking shelter at their Long Island home, Grey Gardens. As their wealth and contact with the outside world dwindled, so did their grasp on reality. The reclusive socialites made headlines across the country when the health department threatened to raid their East Hampton mansion in the early ’70s, prompting Jackie herself to intervene in an attempt to save the family name.
