Sent by Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman), a corrupt official who plans to profit from the railroad, the residents of Rock Ridge, who all seem to be called Johnson, initially harbour a racial bias toward their new sheriff. However, they soon warm to him after realising that he and his new friend, Jim (Gene Wilder), are the only hope they have against a wave of thugs sent to rid the town of its population.
