When the James gang terrorises the town, sharpshooter John Bonniwell (Richard Dix), a Civil War veteran and gold miner en route to Oregon, kills three out of the four members, and saves the bank from being robbed. Bonniwell’s gunshot wounds land him in the hospital, but bank president Steve Barat (Albert Dekker), who controls the town, pays the hospital bills and nominates Bonniwell to be the new town Marshal.
Bonniwell realises that this means he will be working for Barat’s interests, but decides to stay on as Marshal after he meets Eleanor Sager (Jane Wyatt), the proprietor of the town’s hotel.
He soon comes into conflict with Barat, as he is squeezing the townspeople for every penny he can get out of them.
